    Rapid clearing of apoptotic cells by phagocytes may prevent tissue damage. Studies show that ICAM-3 (also known as CD50), expressed on leukocytes, interacts with macrophages during apoptotic cell clearing(Torr et al., 2012). ICAM-3 plays an important role in the recruitment and tethering of macrophages during the process of clearing apoptotic human leukocytes, and ICAM-3 deficient cells have reduced clearance of apoptotic cells by phagocytes. This antibody, (MA4), has been shown to block the interaction of apoptotic leukocytes with macrophages/phagocytes.
