  • Background
By post-translational covalent conjugation to other proteins within the cell, small ubiquitinrelated modifiers (SUMOs) are able to regulate the cell-cycle through a common enzyme cascade involving the same E1 activating and E2 conjugating enzymes. In vertebrates, three SUMO proteins have been identified: SUMO-1, and the highly similar SUMO-2 and SUMO-3 (often referred to as SUMO-2/3). Comparably, one SUMO protein is expressed by invertebrates. Post-translational modifications by SUMO are thought to regulate multiple processes, including transcription, subcellular protein localization, and the stability of proteins.

For laboratory research only, not for drug, diagnostic or other use.
