  • Background
    The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) is the virus that causes the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) which is a serious, potentially life-threatening viral infection. The RdRp protein is an essential enzyme encoded in the genomes of all RNA-containing viruses with no DNA stage; it catalyzes viral replication through the synthesis of the complementary (-) strand RNA and the subsequent synthesis of the genomic (+) strand from the (-) strand RNA template. In mammalian cells, the replication of (+) strand RNA genomes occurs in the cytoplasm where the viral RNA-synthesizing machinery is commonly associated with cytoplasmic membranes. Due its crucial role in viral replication, the RdRp protein is a potential target for anti-SARS drugs.
