  • Background
Enkephalins (penta-peptides) have been discovered as regulators of nerve impulses involving pain in the brain. It has been shown that these peptides act as natural analgesics (pain-killers) and their action mimics that of morphine and other opiates. At present, it is thought that the morphine-like effects are due to aromatic side chains on phenylanine and tyrosine which mimic a similar structure on morphine. Research shows that it does not make much difference whether the enkephalin contains methionine or leucine at the acid end of the peptide for its action.

For laboratory research only, not for drug, diagnostic or other use.

  • Cholinergic interneurons are differentially distributed in the human striatum
  • Ultrastructural localization of enkephalin and mu-opioid receptors in the rat ventral tegmental area
  • Substance P and enkephalin immunoreactivities in axonal boutons presynaptic to physiologically identified dorsal horn neurons. An ultrastructural multiple-labelling study in the cat
  • Mimics of the binding sites of opioid receptors obtained by molecular imprinting of enkephalin and morphine
  • Characterization and immunocytochemical application of monoclonal antibodies against enkephalins
